Current outbreaks in northern Alberta, Calgary, and Edmonton
Alberta Health Minister Adriana LaGrange was noncommittal on the disease that killed an Ontario toddler last year, saying “It is a parental choice, and parents and guardians have to make sure that they’re well informed to make the best choice that’s right for them and their families” (CTV News)
Canada had 147 cases of measles last year (with 1 death), a case number that has already been exceeded in 2025 with 173 not even a quarter of the way in to the year. Alberta falls well short of the target of 95% vaccination coverage, with measured zones ranging from a high of 80% down to below 50%.
Former Alberta Medical Association head Dr Paul Parks notes that this outbreak will affect Alberta’s already stressed Emergency Departments:
Ouch… this is honestly terrible.
I don’t think people understand what it costs to contact trace and attempt to contain this virus. While our EDs struggle for spaces to care for the sick, a reminder: we can’t use an ED care space for 2 HOURS after a suspected case is in it! https://t.co/A5Zh7I2fza
