This often means that surgeons are available, but other required resources are not.
Emergency rooms can sometimes “divert” emergency patients to other hospitals. On this date, two of Calgary’s hospitals were on diversion at the same night.
Patients can find themselves sitting with appendicitis waiting hours for an ambulance to shuttle them somewhere else. Alberta Medical Association president Dr. Paul Parks lets us know that this delay can increase the possibility of complications and the chance of death.
Real time Evidence: TWO of Calgary's hospitals are on diversion tonight.
Not one… TWO… on the same night! This means all gen surg cases have to overload remaining sites.
Please continue to seek care at your nearest ED…
But GOVT must fix this.https://t.co/4FQpgnEnpL

Some patients in the ER who need urgent surgery have to be transferred to other hospitals because of a lack of available support teams. This is becoming more common. Albertans are not just facing delays, but are now at risk of not receiving emergency care in time. pic.twitter.com/ABnMytTGtU
