Alberta’s “energy-only” market (opted for by the UCP in 2019) failed to have available energy that a “capacity market” would.
“Energy-only is we pay for energy, only,” Affordability and Utilities Minister Nathan Neudorf said in an interview. “So if you produce energy, we pay for that. We don’t pay for contracts for (capacity) on standby like other jurisdictions.”
“It’s good when things are going well, […] It can leave you short at times like this.”
